Mark your calendar now for May 9, 2009 for ‘Tucker Day’ as hosted by the Main Street Tucker Alliance. This years’ festivities include the annual Tucker Parade, pancake breakfast and 5k run in addition to the Main Street Market which features live music, arts and crafts vendors, food and activities for children. The Tucker Day celebration will be followed by a cruise-in on Main Street featuring both antique and special interest cars and motorcycles.

Plan to get to Main Street early in order to watch the parade, enjoy freshly made pancakes and purchase a souvenir t-shirt. The 2008 Tucker Day shirts were a hot commodity and unfortunately sold our long before the days activities came to an end. Bands will play throughout the day and the festival usually runs early morning until around 4pm at which point the street market is replaced with the cars for the cruise-in.

Attendance at the Annual Tucker Day festivities is a wonderful way to show your support for local area businesses and the revitalization of Tucker’s Downtown Core Area. In addition, the proceeds of the pancake breakfast support the 2008 Georgia State Champion Tucker High School Football team and Quarterback Club while the 5K run benefits the Tucker High School Marching Band and Booster Club.

There is only one word for describing Santa on Main this year and that word is CUTE. Santa’s parade down Main Street was lead by the band from Tucker Middle School and all the children in the band seemed genuinely happy to be able to participate. Santa followed the band in an antique red pickup truck festooned with garland and waving to all the eager young children as he passed. After Santa lit the Tucker Christmas tree he went across the street to the John Martin State Farm Insurance facility where he promptly held court for the kids while the Tucker Middle School band provided an short Christmas concert.

Several Tucker organizations offered entertainment for the kids on Main Street. There was free eggnog and sugar cookies that the kids were allowed to decorate from Publix. The Tucker Historical Society hosted a table at which the children could decorate Christmas ornaments and Tucker Lodge #42 had two fire pits where the crowd was invited to roast marshmallows and make s’mores.

A few of the shops on Main Street were hosting open houses. Both Market on Main and Stephen Harvey Salon had nice crowds milling about while a few of the other shops on Main appeared to be open but non-participants in the celebration. hopefully next year even more merchants will participate and also your roving Tuckerpedia reporter checks her camera batteries before departing her tiny Tucker abode.

The weather was outstanding and vendors sales were very brisk beginning at 8:30am. The GHS vendors included many local and regional growers of hostas, ferns, Japanese maples and other companion plants in addition to vendors that offered unique garden accessories and the Georgia Daylily Society.

The show was well organized and had a record number of entries for the Artistic Exhibition. As one of the oldest local Hosta Societies in the United States, the GHS holds the distinction of having the most local shows of any group within the American Hosta Society. GHS holds these shows as an educational project to help introduce the general public to the genus hosta. Hosta leaves are displayed in vases and are judged by panels of judges accredited by The American Hosta Society.

The Hosta Show and Sale was held on the same day as the “Tucker Garden Tour” hosted by the Tucker Historical Society and allowed gardening enthusiasts a rare opportunity to combine a plant show, garden tours and shopping in one day.
